Hair Shear Care and Upkeep Themes, Part 2

In part one of this two-part blog series, we went over some basic tips on care and upkeep for your hair shears. Quality hair shears require the right basic maintenance to remain pristine and effective, and these minor areas will add years of life and value to your shears.

At Scissor Mall, we’re proud to offer not only a huge variety of hair shears, including edgy shears like our Mirage Reaper, but also a wide range of tips and expertise on the proper care for any of the hair shears you purchase from us. Today’s part two of our series will go over a few additional themes when it comes to upkeep for hair shears, including some bits on sharpness and the proper usage of shears within the salon so they do not wear down prematurely.

Sharpness and Tension Retention

Sharpness is a regular concern for hair stylists, and you should be taking regular opportunities to keep them sharp. This speaks not only to using sharpener tools in the proper ways, but also to avoiding risks like dropping the shears or any others that may risk blade sharpness. The quality of your cuts will suffer immediately if sharpness is impacted, and both you and clients will notice.

Also important down these lines, however, is the tension in the scissors. Too tight a tension can damage the blades and place huge amounts of stress on your hands, while loose shears will not produce the kind of cut you’re looking for – they will bend hair instead of providing straight cuts. Take time to regularly ensure both these areas are in the proper place.

Client Shampoo Use

One specific tip we can offer for shear use on clients: In the vast majority of cases, shampooing client hair in advance of the cut is recommended. This is because shampoo removes the grease in your client’s hair, grease that may damage scissor blades or dull them out faster than normal. There may be some cases where a basic wetting of the hair does the trick here, but shampooing is the safest route to keeping your blades sharp and free of damage.

Hair Use Only

Finally, under no circumstances should hair shears be used for any cutting purpose besides hair. This is something most stylists know – but many friends, family members or even clients may not, and it’s your responsibility to lay down the law here. Do not lend out your shears for any other purpose, even if it’s a quick one you don’t think will have much impact. There are major texture differences between different materials, and your hair shears are designed to cut hair, not any of these other materials that may come with varying thicknesses or fabrics.
